Guidelines
for Storing and Freezing Breast Milk
There
are several guidelines that recommend slightly different times; if you
are close to, but not exactly, on target with the schedules,
that will be fine.
When
expressing and storing milk, always remember to:
• Wash your hands before expressing milk
• Clean containers, glass is preferred.
• Before storing milk, write the date on it. Store it in the back of the
refrigerator or freezer where it is coldest.
• Store 2-4 ounces at a time. There is less chance of thawing out too much
and wasting leftovers.
Storing
Breast milk (Freshly expressed)
• Room Temperature:
4-10 hours
• Refrigerator: 5-8 days
• Freezer: 3-4 months. This is for freezers with a separate door from
the refrigerator.
To warm up frozen or cold breast milk: Put the bottle of breast milk
in a bowl of warm water. Never use a microwave, for breast milk or any
baby food.
You can let it slowly thaw by putting it in the refrigerator for several
hours. Once thawed, it can be stored in the refrigerator for 24 hours,
or at room temperature for an hour. But once it is thawed, it must be
used. You can not freeze it again.
