Making a Safe Place for Your Baby to Sleep:

• Place your baby on his back to sleep.
• Use one light cover or blanket. Don't let your baby get too hot.
A general rule is one layer more than what you are wearing.
• Remove pillows, stuffed animals, loose bedding. These are things that could smother the baby.
• Use a firm mattress, not a sofa, couch or water bed.

Whether your baby sleeps in a separate crib, a co-sleeper or in your family bed, these all apply.

• Do not smoke around your baby. If you do smoke, go outside. Wear a shirt or sweater that you can take off when you go back inside. That way, the residue from the smoke will not be on your clothes when you hold your baby.
